Planning the day
The operator sets the hours and the prices and changes them. What does not change is the shape of the day, and the parking.
Hours, admission and the lights schedule live on the official site — check it the morning you go, because winter hours are short and the gate closes earlier than people expect.
Timed entry
Book a slot, arrive inside it. The slot manages the gate queue, not the animals. Arriving early buys you nothing but standing; arriving late on a busy weekend can cost you the slot.
| Time | What it is actually like |
|---|---|
| Gate opening | Quietest hour of the day. Animals fed, keepers moving, best light. |
| 11:00–14:00 weekend | Stroller traffic jam at the entrance and the food court. |
| After 15:00 winter | Cold and empty. Great for the wilds loop, bad for the café. |
Parking
The lot fills by eleven on a sunny weekend and the overflow goes onto the street where the signs are unforgiving. Come at opening, or take transit.
Transit
The 9 and the 19 both stop within a short walk of the north gate; the LRT plus a bus is the sane option on a weekend. Check Calgary Transit for the current routing — it changes with construction.
How long to budget
Three hours for the wilds loop and the penguins at a walk. Add an hour if you have children under six or you plan to eat there.
